New York Costume Institute's Gala 2011 - A Tribute to McQueen

The annual Met Ball gala was as usual an opulent affair filled to the brim with fashions finest, who had all come out in force to celebrate the opening of the new Alexander McQueen retrospective exhibition, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.

The red carpet was awash with the most stunning gowns, you were truly spoilt for choice, but I have picked a few of the people who stood out on the night for me.

#1 Gisele Bundchen wearing Alexander Mcqueen
Supermodel Gisele Bundchen is up first with a stunning red bustier gown, taken from Alexander McQueens Autumn/Winter collection 2005.

Alexander's Fall 2005 collection brought a mix of sixties and Hollywood glamour, it's rock and roll style themes were fused with beautiful Marylin moments.. what more could a girl ask for?
Glacially restrained tailoring, early rocker chic, the classic Hollywood ball gown moment: He had 'em all. Plus great hair, great music, and a roar of old-school glamour.
His showstopper was a Charles James-meets-Marilyn evening gown, strapless sculpted fishtail.

"Happy birthday, Mr. President"
Marylin Monroe

This sumptuous gown also graced Vogue's June 2005 cover worn by Cate Blanchett, oozing effortless glamour of the highest quality. Simply Stunning.

#2 Christina Ricci wearing Zac Posen

Christina Ricci channeled dark glamour in a corseted, netted, sheer black gown by the designer Zac Posen. It was dramatically gothic and cinched in so much Dita von Teese would have been jealous.

The perfect tribute to McQueen

McQueen’s work celebrated nature but alot of his collections also plunged into depths of darkness, often incorporating skull's and fetishistic elements like spiked shoes and extremely corseted waists.

“There’s something … kind of Edgar Allen Poe, kind of deep and kind of melancholic about my collections”  Alexander McQueen

# 3 Renee Zellweger wearing Carolina Herrera

I loved Renee in this beautiful Carolina Herrera gown, it compliments her pale complexion perfectly, with its creamy gold lightly skimming her petite frame. The material looks so delicate and the embellishment details give the gown that little bit of edge. She looked regal and elegant amongst all the bright colours of the other guests outfits.

#4 Shalom Harlow wearing Marchesa

Shalom Harlow shone in a nude and black gown by Marchesa. I  loved the semi sheer fabric it emotes a sexiness where-as the black embroidery gives the gown a touch of modernity, overall look modern day vintage starlet.

It was dramatic with its loops and swirls, the dress had presence and was the definition of decadence.

The dress debuted in 2010 at New York Fashion Week.
